Supporting the childbearing family: An interdisciplinary service-learning approach to education
This presentation describes an interdisciplinary service-learning approach to studying maternity care in which students train to become birth doulas and work in interdisciplinary teams to serve a diverse population of clients. Students describe the positive impact of the course experience in surveys, narrative reflections, and debriefings.

Early integration of gerontologic didactic and clinical experiences: Changing nursing students’ attitudes, interest, and knowledge

Increasingly, employers report that new nurses lack the soft skills necessary to be an outstanding employee-time management, organization, effective coping. This study explored the effect of a first-year retention program on student retention, and students’ perceived needs to improve retention.

Informatics/health IT implementation in DNP education: Faculty, organizational, and program characteristics for diverse professional roles
Nursing informatics/health IT is critical to achieving and measuring patient safety and outcomes as well as key components of graduate nursing education, accreditation and practice. Electronic survey findings (2011) from AACN accredited DNP program directors are compared to a replicated/expanded follow-up survey to further explore informatics/health IT content and experience.

Advances in clinical teaching and learning: Development of a new tool
Clinical teaching and learning was re-imagined using a new progressive tool along with instructional strategies, to provide guidance to faculty and students in the development of clinical judgment skills within patient care environments. Is perceived racism a barrier to career advancement in nursing? Black nurses’ perspectives
A focused ethnographic study of black nurses was conducted using individual semi-structured interviews to examine their perception about racism in nursing and its effect on their career advancement. Findings is of great significance to nursing, especially nurse leaders at the micro and macro levels of the healthcare system.

Don’t just check the box, check your athlete’s heart: Adding an ECG to participation screenings
Sudden cardiac arrest continues to be a leading cause of death in male athletes participating in competitive sports. There is a gap in the current preventative screening practice. This study evaluates the feasibility of adding a 12-lead ECG to pre-participation screening to capture abnormalities that could lead to SCA.
