Abstract

The purposes of this study were to: (1) expand upon the pilot study by Velianoff (1983) to define more precisely professional accountability in providing nursing care, (2) to test the construct validity of a tool developed to measure the constructs, and (3) contribute to a better understanding of accountability in nursing. The theoretical and conceptual bases of the study included: (1) Velianoff's (1983) pilot study, (2) French and Ravens (1960) Social Bases of Power, (3) Hirschman's (1970) Exit, Voice and Loyalty model, and (4) Rotter's (1954) Social Learning theory dealing with Locus of Control. Four hypotheses were tested.
