Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) is a medical condition affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Research has shown Hispanic individuals have higher occurrence rates of DM2 than non-Hispanic individuals (Mora & Golden, 2017). Although this condition can be treated with medication, lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise are also needed for adequate management. With diet modification, patients can significantly improve their hemoglobin A1C (hbA1c) results, improving their DM2 control, and reducing the risk for worsening of disease and complications. Many studies have concluded there is a need to provide culturally tailored dietary education in patients with DM2 to improve management. In this quality improvement project, a culturally tailored educational handout was developed to teach Hispanic/Latine patients DM2 diet knowledge. Participants were recruited during their appointments with their primary care providers, and asked to complete a verbally administered pre-test, provide current weight, waist circumference, and recent blood glucose levels. Participants then received and reviewed the educational pamphlet with the author and were encouraged to use the handout to make dietary changes. After four weeks, participants were contacted to complete the post-test, and provide updated weight, waist circumference, and blood sugar levels. Results demonstrated an improvement in DM2 diet knowledge by an improvement in test scores, and DM2 management by an improvement in waist circumference and blood glucose levels following receiving and implementing culturally tailored interventions.
