Abstract
Nursing work dissemination often begins with a national podium or poster presentation. Submitting an abstract to these professional conferences can be challenging and time-consuming for novice writers. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Outcome-Based Continuing Education (OB-CE) model was used as a framework to design a hands-on Abstract Writing Workshop to help learners embark on their dissemination journey (ANCC, 2021; ANCC, 2025).
In September 2022, an environmental scan revealed less than fifty percent of projects were disseminated beyond the unit of improvement. Additionally, many nurses lacked knowledge and skills of abstract writing, often the first step in the dissemination process. In response, content experts collaborated with a Nurse Planner to design a five-level outcome program aligned with the ANCC’s OB-CE model (ANCC, 2021).
First, the team identified five key outcomes the learners could achieve. Next, a technology forward approach was implemented to facilitate just-in-time learning, provide essential resources, and support the dissemination of OB-CE achievement. An accompanied workbook enabled participants to immediately apply each step of the abstract writing process. To further reinforce learning, peer review was integrated into the program, allowing participants to share each element of their work (Choi & Montayre, 2025). This strategy not only enhanced understanding but also highlighted the value of peer review (Haag-Heitman & George, 2011).
Upon completion of a draft, students achieved level three OB-CE and were offered next steps of peer review, coaching and finalizing a polished abstract. AI and technology enhanced communication provided follow-up to participants to ensure progression to the next levels of outcomes, including a final submitted abstract. Accepted abstracts reach OB-CE level five for dissemination and impact in healthcare.
Outcomes were measured for formative analysis and quantitative achievement. A 25 percent increase in dissemination was met in a two-year time period, along with a 70 percent acceptance rate for abstracts submitted.
OB-CE education enabled tangible achievement in each participant’s dissemination journey. Five different fellowship programs adopted the workshop as an essential competency and a first step for novice learners in dissemination. Targeting outcomes to the educational process enables measurement of the learner’s application of knowledge and skills (Jenkins et al., 2023).
