Abstract

Background: Nursing competency is vital to delivering high-quality healthcare services. Robust and culturally appropriate assessment tools are essential for evaluating nursing performance and guiding professional development. This study aimed to examine the internal reliability and construct validity of the Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses (CIRN) scale in the Mongolian context.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 550 randomly selected registered nurses working in 11 public tertiary hospitals in Ulaanbaatar and five regional hospitals of Mongolia. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s alpha, and construct validity was examined through exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Sampling adequacy was evaluated using the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) test, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was applied to assess factorability.

Results: The 55-item inventory demonstrated excellent internal reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.981). The KMO value was 0.972, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was highly significant (p < 0.001), confirming the suitability of the data for factor analysis. EFA identified a six-factor structure, supporting the construct validity of the instrument.

Conclusion: The Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses scale shows strong psychometric properties and is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing nursing competencies in Mongolia. Its applicability in clinical evaluation, research, and professional development makes it a valuable tool for advancing nursing practice and improving healthcare quality.
