Abstract

Background and Objectives: Noise in intensive care units (ICUs) has been identified as a significant environmental stressor affecting both patient outcomes and nursing performance. However, empirical data on ICU nurses’ noise-management practices and their determinants remain limited. This study aimed to examine the level of noise-management performance among ICU nurses and to identify individual and organizational factors associated with such performance.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected via a self-administered online survey from 216 registered nurses working in ICUs in Korea and surrounding regions between November 2025. Measures included validated instruments for noise experience, response attitude to noise, knowledge related noise, nursing work environment, and noise-management performance. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine significant predictors of noise-management performance.

Results: As data collection is still ongoing, the results will be fully analyzed and presented at the conference. Based on the data collected from 82 participants to date, the following findings can be reported. The mean noise management performance score was 3.50 (SD = 0.584). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the nursing work environment and noise management performance (r = 0.263, p < 0.05). Noise knowledge showed a weak positive correlation with noise management performance, while responses to noise exhibited a weak negative correlation; however, neither relationship was statistically significant (r = 0.060, p = 0.595; r = −0.103, p = 0.357, respectively). Noise experience was not correlated with noise management performance.

Conclusions and Implications for Nursing Practice: This study is expected to provide evidence on ICU nurses’ noise-management performance and their determinants. Findings are expected to guide the development of interventions to enhance patient care and work conditions.

Description

This study examined factors influencing noise management performance among ICU nurses in Korea. Noise experience, response to noise, noise knowledge, and the nursing work environment were assessed. Preliminary data from 82 participants showed a mean performance score of 3.50 (SD = 0.584). The nursing work environment was positively correlated with noise management performance (r = 0.263, p < 0.05), whereas noise knowledge, experience, and responses showed no significant associations.
