Evaluating Interprofessional Education Through C-ICE 2.0: Refining Interprofessional Collaboration [Title Slide]
Abstract
Background: The complexity of healthcare delivery demands that practitioners collaborate effectively across disciplines to ensure patient safety and optimize outcomes. Interprofessional education (IPE) has become a cornerstone of health professions training, with the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies providing a widely adopted framework for preparing learners for team-based care. There remains a critical need for instruments that are valid and capable of reliably assessing observable team-based behaviors. To address this gap, an interprofessional team created The Creighton Interprofessional Collaborative Evaluation (C-ICE) tool. The C-ICE plays a key role in assessing students' ability to demonstrate the IPEC Core Competencies within clinical and simulated settings. The C-ICE is recognized as the only instrument to assess behavioral change in a team's performance, evaluating collaboration, leadership, and communication skills. IPEC’s revised competencies in 2023 necessitated a review and update of the C-ICE instrument to ensure continued relevance to and efficacy with interprofessional practice. The C-ICE 2.0 was developed in alignment with the 2023 IPEC competencies.
Can the C-ICE 2.0 effectively evaluate interprofessional team behaviors in alignment with the updated 2023 IPEC Core Competencies?
Methods: The methods for this project consisted of focus groups and electronic surveys that were sent to national interprofessional experts to gather quantitative and qualitative data on the C-ICE 2.0. A test-retest procedure was designed to assess the reliability of the instrument. Data collection and analysis focused on establishing both the validity and reliability of the instrument for use in the clinical and simulated settings.
Results: The C-ICE 2.0 demonstrated strong validity and reliability. The C-ICE 2.0 provides a robust instrument for assessing interprofessional team behaviors, ensuring alignment with the 2023 IPEC competencies. Its application in clinical and simulated settings allows for the evaluation of critical skills such as communication and teamwork. Findings support strong validity and reliability, highlighting its potential to advance IPE and practice by fostering effective teamwork and improving patient outcomes.
Future research will explore how the C-ICE 2.0 can be adapted for diverse healthcare disciplines and settings.
