Sigma Repository Item Acquisition and Review Types

The Sigma Repository is dedicated to transparency.

Each item record acknowledge its acquisition method and review or evaluation type.

Acquisition Types

  • Self-submission - Submitted by author/copyright holder.
  • Proxy-submission - Submitted by author/copyright holder's (s') authorized designee.
  • Publisher-submission - Submitted by original publisher as copyright holder.
  • Previously published materials
    • Indexed from External Source (Permission Granted by Copyright Holder) - As-published copy reproduced in the Sigma Repository with full acknowledgement and with express written permission from original publisher.
    • Indexed from External Source (Per Creative Commons License) - As-published copy posted in the Sigma Repository via the rights granted in a Creative Commons License attached to the original work. Check individual item record for further details.

Review Types

  • Abstract Review Only: Reviewed by Event Host - Posters and presentation slides do not undergo further review prior to posting in the repository unless noted in an item record. The original abstract review and acceptance for presentation at the event level is deemed proof of value.
  • External Evaluation: Organization-based Material - Materials submitted by organization/corporate authors that have been evaluated and approved by the organization. The submission rests on the organization's reputation.
  • External Review: Previously Published Material - Articles that have been published in scholarly journals and previously peer-reviewed do not undergo further peer-review prior to acceptance and posting in the repository.
  • Faculty Approved: Degree-based Submission - These submissions are the same types as listed directly below, but they are accepted and posted in the repository based on the suggestion and urging of faculty member's(s') belief in the value of the material.
  • None: Degree-based Submission - Dissertations, theses, DNP capstone projects, and other final papers and classroom projects that have been defended or graded as part of required coursework. The submission's acceptance and posting in the repository relies on the reputation of the degree grantor and its nursing program.
  • None: Educational Material - The submission is education-based material created for students, faculty, staff nurses, patients, etc. These materials are accepted as educational and do not undergo further review or evaluation prior to posting in the repository.
  • None: Event Material, Invited Presentation - Posters and presentations that are created by plenary and guest speakers and rely on the speaker's(s') knowledge and expertise.
  • None: Professionally Edited Material - The submission has been professionally edited and created for publication/dissemination. For example, an international organization's best practice guidelines.
  • None: Repository Group Participant Submission (Reputation-based) - The submission is accepted and posted in the repository based on the reputation of a school of nursing, hospital, health-related organization or company that regularly submits materials to the repository.
  • None: Reputation-based Submission - The submission is accepted and posted in the repository based on the reputation of the submitting author's(s') subject knowledge and expertise.
  • None: Sigma Grant Recipient Report - Sigma Foundation grant recipient reports do not undergo further evaluation or review prior to acceptance and posting in the repository. The grant application process is peer-reviewed prior to the award being granted.
  • None: Sigma Staff Presentation - Sigma staff present at many Sigma-hosted events. Their presentations are based on their area of expertise and topic knowledge. There is no further evaluation or review prior to acceptance and posting in the repository.
  • Peer-review: Open - In planning stages. Original submissions of qualified materials to the repository's Open Peer-review Portal are peer reviewed in an open manner prior to acceptance and posting. For more information, click here. This method of dissemination qualifies as publication.
  • Peer-review: Single Blind - Original submissions of qualified materials to the repository's former peer-review system were reviewed using a single blind method. This method is no longer used and the repository has moved to the open review method.
