Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether traditional nursing education aligns and correlates with formal cultural awareness education of new graduate nurses, and how they translate their practice into culturally competent care. The research studies I selected for my project were qualitative research, systematic reviews, and current nursing students' responses. This evidence showcases that providing educational interventions to incorporate cultural awareness in education would add to the competency of newly graduated nurses. Individualized care is emphasized in the traditional nursing curriculum framework, but there should be a form of cultural awareness training. Educational interventions ranged from webinars and travel-abroad programs to transcultural education; the authors assessed student proficiency using a pre-post-test design. The results indicated that implementing a proposed educational intervention about cultural awareness improved the competency of newly graduated nurses in the clinical work setting. As part of my research, I conducted polls with nursing students at Purdue University Northwest, which showed tangible proof of the relevance students assign to cultural awareness in the healthcare system. Culturally competent care is fundamental in nursing. The profession is based on providing high-quality care to patients from different backgrounds and cultures in order to enhance patient outcomes.

Description

This study explores the impact of formal cultural awareness education on new graduate nurses and its relationship to their ability to provide culturally competent care. The traditional nursing curriculum framework emphasizes individualized care, yet it should include a form of cultural awareness training. Culturally competent care is fundamental in nursing, and the profession is based on providing high-quality care to patients to enhance patient outcomes.
