Abstract

Background: The healthcare industry, especially in clinical settings, is heavily reliant on the availability of skilled nursing professionals. Despite the increasing demand for nurses, many clinical settings face challenges related to nurse retention. High turnover rates not only affect the quality of care but also result in financial and operational inefficiencies for healthcare institutions. Understanding the factors that influence a nurse’s decision to remain in the clinical setting is critical to addressing these issues and improving retention strategies.

Aim: The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the key factors influencing nurses' decisions to remain in the clinical setting.

Methodology: This study will employ a quantitative descriptive design to explore the factors that influence nurses' decisions to remain in the clinical setting. A descriptive design is appropriate as it allows for the collection of data at a single point in time, providing a snapshot of the current factors affecting nurses' retention. The researcher will gather quantitative data using structured surveys or questionnaires, which will be distributed to nurses across various departments. The data will be analyzed to identify key factors such as work environment, job satisfaction, professional development opportunities, compensation, leadership support, and workload, among others that contribute to nurses' decisions to stay in their roles. The study will focus on clinical nurses employed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre-Jeddah (KFSHRC-J). Specifically, three departments will be targeted for the survey: Ambulatory Care Nursing, Nursing Specialty Services and Nurses General Services. By focusing on these specific departments, the research aims to capture a comprehensive view of the factors influencing retention across different nursing roles within the hospital. The findings will provide valuable insights that can inform strategies to improve nurse retention and enhance the overall work environment.

Significance of Study: This study will offer valuable insights for healthcare policymakers, administrators, and hospital management teams, helping them develop effective retention strategies. By addressing key factors that influence nurse retention, healthcare institutions can reduce turnover rates, enhance patient care quality, and improve the overall working environment for nurses.
