Effectiveness of Educational Interventions in Developing Patient Safety Competence in Nursing Students: International Comparative Study: Georgia and Estonia [Title Slide]

Abstract

Competent and qualified nursing staff are essential to the patient's recovery process. Getting a comprehensive education contributes to the formation of skilled staff. Educational institutions must promote the development of programs corresponding to the competencies developed by the World Health Organization [1], [2]]. Nursing involves the promotion of health, the prevention of illness, and the care of the sick, disabled, and dying. Nurses who provide direct patient care must have quality education in identifying patient safety risks to prevent errors and incidents. Nurses are central to patient safety and safe care planning [3]. Nurses have been considered an auxiliary part of the medical profession in Georgia. The problem of nurses is not only quantitative but also qualitative. Their qualifications are much lower than modern standards. The structure for raising the qualifications of nursing personnel has not been established in the country. Also, there is no second or third level of higher nursing education. The education and qualification of the nurse play an essential role in monitoring and evaluating the patient's health status. A sufficient number of highly qualified nurses in the clinic is directly related to the safety of patients [5]. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) believes that education significantly impacts nurses' knowledge and skills. Nurse clinicians who have earned a bachelor's degree are better prepared to meet the demands of modern nursing. Critical thinking is one of the things that are important for patient safety and resolution [4]. According to the analysis of the results of various studies, the higher the level of nursing education, the more nurses are aware of the importance of postgraduate education and nursing values and use it as a basis for safe patient care. Almost all nurses working in clinics in Georgia are graduates of professional schools. The number of nurses in Georgia is one of the lowest in the European region and is decreasing yearly. The country has a staff shortage of highly qualified nurses. Deficits filled by vocational school nurses graduate from vocational schools must be improved to provide quality nursing services. Raising education, developing appropriate teaching methods, and implementing problem-oriented teaching will positively impact the quality of education, the profession's development, the quality of medical services, the results of treatment, and patient care.
