Abstract

This EBP project aimed to provide SDM council leaders (CL) across a 27-site healthcare system, including 7 Magnet and 10 Pathway facilities, with resources to build leadership confidence via a virtual workshop. The goal was to improve CL’s self-efficacy, staff engagement, and nurse satisfaction.

A gap was identified in resources to support shared decision making (SDM) CLs during their elected term. Feedback showed CLs lacked knowledge and self-efficacy to lead effectively. Higher self-efficacy predicts leadership success. To improve CLs' confidence and staff engagement, a workshop was developed to support leadership skills, including meeting management, technology, curated role education, open discussion, and digital resources.

Through a 2-hour virtual workshop, CL at various facilities enhanced leader confidence and efficacy to lead the SDM councils in 2025. Sessions targeted council chair/co-chair, secretaries, and leader mentors. Breakout rooms provided curated role content and networking opportunities. A pre- and post-intervention digital survey using the Leadership Self Efficacy (LSE) scale was conducted before, immediately after, and 6 months post-workshop. Additional data will be evaluated from the NDNQI engagement annual survey. Over 200 employees attended across 3 sessions, with 155 pre-survey and 133 post-survey responses. The 6-month post-survey is pending. Frontline staff made up 90% of attendees.

Data is currently being analyzed for significance via a paired t-test, however preliminary data shows a significant improvement in confidence with the skills developed. Qualitative feedback was overwhelmingly positive. When asked how helpful the attendance to the workshop was, on a scale of 1-5, the average rating was 4.53, with 91% scoring a 4 or 5. Feedback included “Very engaging and insightful workshop for a first timer. Boosted my confidence and gave me the direction to get started. Thank you for this and look forward to more such sessions in the future.” and “Thanks for providing additional tools for our toolbox to better serve our entities.”

Due to the workshop, participants enhanced leader confidence and efficacy, validating the need to prepare new CL. This project supports SDM and is expected to promote retention, confidence, and trust, thus improving safety, quality, and satisfaction outcomes. Results are being analyzed for future programs.
