Abstract

Introduction: Sigma members reflect a caring culture to show desired change. Following Sigma’s initiation of Global Regions in 2011, a group of visionary Sigma leaders established the Global Leadership Mentoring Community (GLMC).1

Purpose: The GLMC mentor-mentee relationships broaden nurses ability to reflect on personal and professional leadership growth. The vision of the GLMC is through successful mentoring, participants will enhance their confidence in their global nursing leadership, gaining greater cultural awareness of the issues challenging professional nursing and be personally enriched. This unique mentoring opportunity has demonstrated that global leadership mentoring can strengthen nurses in all settings and help nursing shape the world of healthcare.2

Implications: GLMC reflects the caring nature of Sigma by allowing dyads to set individualized goals focused on helping both mentee and mentor grow and thrive as nursing leaders. GLMC has had a positive impact on educators and leaders, including these exemplars from participants:

  • Exploring self-compassion, coping and self-care strategies to support each other’s progress.
  • Learning from each other and the different practices and cultural contexts in which nurses work.
  • Exploring career paths and ways to build nursing research within the nursing workforce.
  • Creating a structured plan for leadership development that is conducive to advancing career trajectory.
  • Assisting novice leaders in building competence and confidence.2
  • Growing in educator roles in the contexts of the global culture of academe itself.3
  • Developing skills in leadership, communication, delegation, and managing difficult conversations.4

These exemplars further reflect the impact of this community on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, and Partnerships.5

Impact/Conclusion: Over the past ten years there have been five cohorts. More than 250 Sigma members have participated in the GLMC, increasing from 7 dyads (Cohort 1) to 41 dyads (Cohort 5), representing all the Sigma Global Regions. Publications include two by mentor-mentee pairs.6Many GLMC participants have served in formal leadership roles within Sigma from Chapter to Board levels. GLMC reflects Sigma’s desire to develop “nursing leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere” by connecting nurses across the globe to enhance cultural competence and leadership development.
