Global Nursing Leadership Through the Balance Theory of Wisdom: Represent, Reflect, Respect, Respond [Symposium Title]

Abstract

Applying wisdom leadership integrates principles of legacy leadership for looking forward, not backward, to influence others in developing change by catalyzing individual best while inspiring others/teams to collectively influence organizational culture (1). Wisdom leadership fulfills legacy leadership by focusing outward on others; herein lies the intersection with caring science in embodying the utmost of being human through knowing, being, and doing by serving others. Emerging from reflective practice skills reflecting on one’s purpose, values, and meaning respect both personal and professional lenses. Wisdom leaders build their legacy of what they want to be known for through awareness of intra and interpersonal dynamics in developing core competencies of intentional behaviors influencing organizational culture to realize its goals.

As a value-laden practice-based discipline, nursing actions are guided by an internal compass of values; living true to one’s intrinsic values creates inner satisfaction, giving purpose and meaning to one’s work. Mismatched values and work experiences deplete emotional energy, losing the joy of meaningful work. Staying true to our internal compass (values) helps manage the emotional work inherent in nursing. Mindfully reflecting on our actions and responses guides personal and professional caring attending to self and others.

Instilled as a habit of the mind, reflective practice becomes a way of being. Engaging through mindful presence prompts purposeful responses, helps make sense to see the whole, cultivates satisfaction, and creates balance. Applying wisdom leadership perspectives, three groups [individual (personal), team (others), or organization (group)] will use the Liberating Structure, 1-2-4-All (2) to apply a cross walk of Representing, Reflecting, Respecting, and Responding in examining the overarching question: How can we use wisdom leadership for integrating caring science in helping nurses thrive globally? Groups will share “All” to identify ways we can individually and collectively respond from global perspectives in recreating our global nursing future living the theme of Represent, Respect, Reflect, Respond.

Overall Symposium Summary: Three presentations apply the Balance Theory of Wisdom framing intelligence, creativity, and knowledge work for balancing intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extra-personal needs and respecting values shaping the environment: 1) Ways the balance theory of wisdom develops values-based leadership, 2) How explicit and tacit knowledge defining caring science are embodied in the balance theory of wisdom, 3) Collectively responding to overarching reflective questions recreating nursing's global future.
