Abstract
Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) care has gaps in the understanding and meeting of non-medical needs of TGD patients.1-7 The current evidence skews towards overmedicalizing aspects of a TGD person’s care and says very little about what aspects are missing from comprehensive TGD patient care.1-8 This project aimed to provide resources via a web page on the web site for a Community Health Center (CHC) in King County, Washington to address these gaps with the types of resources that TGD patients have specifically requested of their providers at this CHC. A survey was created, sent to primary care providers at the CHC, and analyzed. Ideally, the needs of TGD patients at the CHC would have been directly assessed in this project, but surveying TGD patients was not pursued due to insurmountable challenges identified. Therefore, the shared decision was made to ask providers to report what resources their TGD patients have specifically requested of them, as opposed to what resources providers suspect their TGD patients need. The survey results revealed that the most frequently requested resources of their TGD patient population were largely focused on hormone options, mental health, and fertility and birth control, among others. Given the results of the provider survey, which skew toward medical needs, it is difficult to determine if this medicalized view was a result of the political climate, provider prospective, a true difference in what the TGD patients at this CHC desire compared to published literature, or a different confounding factor that has not been identified. Using the survey results as a guide, resources were collected, separated into each of the resource categories, and collated into one cohesive document. Each resource category has 4-7 individual resources, which vary in format and include PDF files and links to websites with written information and pictures to links to videos on YouTube. This first iteration of creating the database of resources was successful, but not without significant barriers and challenges. The resources collected for the CHC website focused on the top six needs that TGD patients have requested of their providers, but the political environment greatly shaped this project and the resources that were available.9-11 At this time, the TGD community and medical resources are not yet published and available for public display as the CHC administration continues to review the delivered resources.
