Abstract

Background: According to World Health Organization, there are approximately 18,000 people die due to burns around the world every year. Burns often lead to prolong hospitalization, affect outlooks, increase treatment cost, and even disability. Besides, people might reject the burning patients owing to their appearance which could also affect their mental health.

There was a burning patient received the standard wound care method, then put on medical-grade honey gel with foam dressing, and it gradually helped wound healing.

Literature Review: After reviewing literature with PICO in different databases (e.g., Medline, PubMed and Cochrane), which P refers to burning wound, I refers to medical-grade honey, C refers to regular wound care or silver-based gel, and O refers to the effect of wound healing, and analyzing carefully, lots of literature has shown the benefit of medical-grade honey.

The researches have been announced that medical-grade honey can improve hard-to-heal pressure ulcers in elders and local infected ulcers, and it won’t damage healthy tissue like silver-based products, so it can be used safely in different types of wounds in elders.

Results and Conclusions: The search result showed that medical-grade honey can doubtlessly improve wound healing, but the therapeutic effect towards burning wound still need more evidence-based data. Moreover, the factors influence wound healing also include the burning degree and the patient’s condition, for instance, age, chronic disease, nutrition condition etc. We look forward to see more evidence-base literature about how medical-grade honey can be used in different kinds of wound, thus to shorten recovery time and release discomfort.
