Enhancing Clinical Trial Literacy in Singapore: A DNP Evaluation of a Health Belief Model-Guided Educational Video [Poster Title]

Abstract

Background: Clinical trials are a cornerstone of modern healthcare [4]. However, approximately 80% of trials fail to enrol participants on time, costing millions and delaying essential treatment [1].This directly impedes progress toward Sustainable Development Goal Target 3.b. In Singapore, community participation remains modest due to micro-level barriers, including misconceptions, fear of exploitation, and limited research literacy. Advanced nursing leadership must promote this by promoting research literacy and informed ethical decision-making.

Purpose: The purpose is to systematically evaluate the effectiveness and implementation feasibility of a short, culturally-tailored educational video designed to enhance public knowledge, perceived safety, and willingness to participate in clinical trials among adults in Singapore.

Theoretical Framework: The project is dually grounded in implementation and behavioural science. The HBM guides the content design to target core psychosocial determinants (Perceived Barriers, Benefits, Self-Efficacy). The RE-AIM framework guides the evaluation to ensure translational rigor across five domains: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance [2].

Methods: A single-group, quasi-experimental pre-post-test (T0-T1) design will be used. Recruitment targets is approximately 200 anonymous participants via a dual-stream convenience sample (social media/IM and clinical posters). The intervention involves a 15-minute online session: Implied Consent - T0 Survey (HBM/Demographics) - Educational Video - T1 Survey (HBM/RE-AIM). Effectiveness is determined by comparing the mean change in HBM scores (T1- T0) using Paired Samples t-tests. Implementation will be assessed using video completion rates, usability metrics, and qualitative thematic analysis of open-text feedback.

Implications for Nursing: This project establishes evidence for integrating a theory-driven digital intervention as an ethical standard of care, ensuring informed consent is truly understood [3]. It exemplifies the DNP role to spearhead systemic transformation, using digital health innovation to bridge the gap between clinical science and the community. Findings will inform policy at the clinical (Adoption) and national level, strengthening the nursing profession’s role as leaders in health literacy and research ethics, and directly supporting the national efforts to meet global health targets (SDG 3).

Description

This project evaluates an HBM-guided video intervention to boost public knowledge and trust in clinical trials in Singapore. Using a pre-post design and RE-AIM, it measures effectiveness against behavioral determinants (knowledge, safety, willingness) and assesses feasibility for institutional adoption.
