Effects of a Mobile Video Education Program on Uncertainty, anxiety, and Satisfaction in Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial [Poster Title]

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Patients awaiting surgery often experience fear and anxiety related to limited information about surgery, concern about not waking up from anesthesia, uncertainty, surgical outcomes, and postoperative pain [1-3]. Preoperative education has been shown to improve these psychological problems [4, 5], and video-based education in particular is increasingly recognized as an effective teaching tool [1]. However, most preoperative education interventions primarily focus on the surgery itself, and rarely directly address major anesthesia-related issues, such as anesthesia safety or postoperative pain [6]. Therefore, in this study, we developed a mobile web-based video education program on general anesthesia and recovery, and sought to examine its impact on uncertainty, anxiety, and nursing education satisfaction in general anesthesia patients. Furthermore, it was examined whether this program has the potential as an effective educational tool in preoperative nursing.

Methods: A randomized controlled trial with a pretest-posttest design was conducted. From May 31, 2023, to January 31, 2024, 70 patients at S University Hospital in Korea were randomly assigned to the experimental or control groups. The day before surgery, the experimental group received both education through printouts and a 12-minute mobile web-based video program that included pre-, intra-, and postoperative anesthesia processes, precautions for recovery, common misconceptions and facts about anesthesia, while the control group received only education through printouts. Uncertainty and anxiety were measured immediately before education and 1–2 hours before surgery, and nursing education satisfaction was measured the day after surgery. Group homogeneity was assessed using the Chi-square test and t-test, and hypotheses were tested using the independent t-test.

Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group had significantly lower preoperative uncertainty (t = 3.62, p = .001) and anxiety (t = 2.22, p = .030) and higher satisfaction with nursing education (t = 5.38, p < .001).

Conclusion: Mobile web-based video education programs focused on anesthesia and recovery reduced uncertainty and anxiety and increased nursing education satisfaction for surgical patients. Integration of these programs into clinical practice can enhance evidence-based patient-centered nursing, increase patient participation and satisfaction, and support standardized preoperative education.

This session highlights the importance of anesthesia education for patients, which has been relatively overlooked compared to surgical education, and introduces a mobile web-based video education program developed to enhance patients' understanding of anesthesia and recovery. This program has been shown to reduce uncertainty and anxiety in surgical patients and improve educational satisfaction, so we would like to share its effects and utilization plans.
