Abstract

COVID19 has caught all people in the world in surprise and has altered the way that humans live in almost all regard. The COVID-19 pandemic created an atmosphere of volatility and has caused significant stress and uncertainty. Young people were severely affected as they had to face school shutdowns, contend with social isolation from friends and significant others, and experienced amplified stress at home and in their communities. Given the unprecedented disruption caused by the pandemic, it is crucial to understand the pandemic’s impact on adolescent health and development. Mental health issues have become a growing concern during the pandemic with reports of adolescents being adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with regard to mental health. Freshmen nursing students, who are adolescents, are entering a profession that is tasked of caring for the public’s health. As such, student nurses as expected to be in the pink of health, including mental health. Hence, understanding college students’ mental health is crucial in ensuring that the carers are ready and able to care. It has been shown that adolescents seeking psychological help in response to the COVID-19 epidemic was low, Researches have noted that students commonly seek help from their peers, both in-person and using digital technologies like texting, social media, and email.
This descriptive research aimed to determine the help seeking behavior (attitude and intent) of freshmen nursing students of a premier university in Manila with the post-COVID-19 pandemic on its backdrop.Within the framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), all 132 freshmen nursing students (total enumeration) were surveyed electronically using Google Forms and utilizing the standardized Mental Health Seeking Attitude and Intention Scale.

Analyzing the weighted mean revealed that the respondents have very positive attitude toward help seeking (4.27/500). Likewise, there is a high help-seeking intent (3.76/5.00). The results indicate openness to seeking help in times of crisis or need. The relationship between help seeking attitude and intention was high at 0.61 using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Identifying these factors in the post-pandemic context will allow the development of targeted interventions to reduce barriers to help-seeking and enhance mental health support services within the university.
