Abstract

Introduction: Responding to the global challenges of investing in nursing leadership and the demands of modern nursing care is a key aspect of the Sigma Call to Action.1 The World Health Organization2 and the International Council of Nurses3 both recognize the health, economic, social, and emotional benefits of investing in nursing leadership to the individual, the workforce, and the wider community and, by being more culturally aware,4 influence health more widely.5 Sigma’s Global Leadership Mentoring Community is one strategy that responds to this challenge.6,7

Purpose: To present insights into participants’ expectations and short-term achievements of mentors and mentees regarding how they respond to these global challenges within the Global Leadership Mentoring Community. Examples will be shared demonstrating the processes and outcomes leading to more long-term achievements.

Methods/Evaluation: Using a program evaluation framework, participants were surveyed to identify their objectives and achievements at the outset, mid- and endpoints of the program.

Findings: In this program cohort, experienced nurse leaders responded positively by demonstrating their commitment to supporting emerging nurse leaders worldwide in developing their leadership and, in turn, gaining considerably themselves. Focusing on personal goals, they responded by creating networking opportunities in each other’s country, engaging in a cross-cultural workshop, and encouraging policy discussions that impact locally. They supported mentees to strengthen their academic writing and podium presentations to disseminate their work more widely. Individually, they were keen to learn from each other, ensuring each dyad member enhanced their confidence in their leadership and understood some of the global cultural issues that different countries face. It was clear that although the challenges across the world are similar, the cultures, environments, and impacts are considerably different. Members were encouraged to strengthen their leadership and respond positively by being proactive to the challenges they face, responding through action and policy.

Implications/Conclusion: The Global Leadership Mentoring Community actively responds to the challenge of investing in nursing leadership and, through each dyad, addresses the considerable demands they face in modern-day nursing. This response demonstrated that they supported each other to thrive and champion global nursing leadership and practice.
